If someone asked me to fix their car, it wouldn't end well for it. But if there was a computer or device that could guide me though every step I need to take, things would be different.
1. The HoloLens as teacher
With the HoloLens technology from Microsoft, this should be achieved. It guides you step by step through repair programs, OP instructions and much more. And more so: choosing the appropriate tool or ordering spare parts no longer needs a switch of process. By placing virtual images in front of the real-world surrounding, augmented reality is created, and digital interaction becomes a part of your work.
2. E-Commerce with the use of Augmented Reality
Utilizing the Microsoft HoloLens, Intershop yet again innovates commerce. The interlocking of augmented reality and e-commerce functionality offers a new purchasing experience. Thanks to the added value of the virtual experience, users can see the object of interest with all its details from all perspectives - and are able to add it, or included (spare) parts, to the shopping cart via voice or sign command.
Another scenario is the purchase of furniture. How about you take a look at your new desk while standing right in your office? Are the criteria of workplace security still met? All product data are available and can be experienced with the virtual model.
3. Intershop’s HoloLens showcase
Intershop’s answer to leverage virtual reality in B2B e-commerce is the HoloMachine – or the exploration of complex models. In our showcase the user can explore a car engine which consists of several assemblies. Those can yet again be taken apart into their spare parts. By disassembling the model into its smallest elements, each part becomes a product which can be put into a shopping cart. - Imagine a technician at a car workshop. The HoloLens can help him or her to order spare parts whenever or wherever he or she is, regardless of greasy hands!
4. Who is the Hololens made for?
According to Alex Kipman, head of HoloLens development, the Hololens is not a consumer product and not intended for the masses. It is intended for use in companies, factories or for field staff, but not (yet) for home use.
We talked to visitors at trade shows and fairs who tried our HoloLens showcase. Most of them were enthusiastic about the visual experience and intuitive usage via voice and hand signs. All of them see the potential as a future way of digital purchasing.
