Your site is live. Can you see what's working and keep improving it?

9:25

A commerce site can be live, taking orders, and still be quietly working against the business.

A slow pricing request can make a product page feel broken. An incorrect account match can show the wrong price. A quote form can appear successful even when the request never reaches sales.

From the customer’s perspective, these are frustrating moments. Behind the screen, they are often signs of a deeper problem.

The [first article](https://blog.intershop.com/can-buyers-and-ai-find-your-products-the-new-rules-of-b2b-discoverability) in this series asked whether customers and machines can find your products. [The second](https://blog.intershop.com/can-buyers-actually-buy-from-you-9-fundamentals-shaping-b2b-digital-commerce) asked whether buyers can follow a clear path forward. This final article asks what happens after those journeys are built: can you see whether they work, understand why they fail, and keep improving them?

That brings us to the final three fundamentals:

*A fast and reliable website*

*A trustworthy measurement foundation*

*A practical way to turn evidence into action*

*In partnership with:*

[![data-realm](https://blog.intershop.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Landingpages/5_logos/data-realm.png?width=351&height=61&name=data-realm.png)](https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0ymfFz0)

At Data Realm, we see these as a baseline rather than a final layer of polish. Our work looks at the customer experience together with the architecture, integrations, data, and business rules supporting it. That wider view helps us move from a visible symptom to the implementation work needed to correct it.

## (7) Build a fast, reliable website

Speed and reliability are the baseline because every other capability depends on them.

A product page may need information from several systems before it is complete. The PIM supplies specifications, the ERP returns inventory and contract pricing, and the commerce platform applies account rules. If one connection slows down, the customer experiences the delay even when the storefront itself is working.

Catchpoint's 2025 Retail Website Performance Benchmark found that one site appeared to load in under half a second from a U.S. cloud vantage point, while real customers waited two to five times longer depending on their internet provider or method of access. The difference reveals an important gap: a platform can appear healthy in a controlled test while a real customer encounters a delay that makes the experience feel unreliable or even unsuccessful.

Data Realm has encountered issues like this firsthand. In one case, a client experiencing apparent payment failures was preparing to replace its payment gateway entirely. Data Realm investigated the complete transaction flow and found that the gateway was working, but a synchronous API integration was delaying confirmation by roughly 13 seconds. Resolving the integration delay reduced the confirmation time to just two seconds, giving customers a more responsive checkout experience without forcing the client to replace a system that was not causing the problem.

This example shows why the visible symptom should not automatically be treated as the source of the problem. Data Realm investigates how the storefront, platform customizations, integrations, and connected systems work together before recommending whether the solution requires a targeted fix or a broader change.

The work does not end with the immediate improvement. Monitoring can reveal when an API slows down or an order becomes stuck between systems. Automated tests can confirm that critical journeys still work after a release. Clear error handling can preserve customer progress when a connected service is temporarily unavailable.

The objective is not a perfect speed score. It is a commerce environment customers can depend on and the business can confidently extend.

## (8) Establish a reliable measurement foundation

Measurement is the baseline because a business cannot improve what it cannot see or trust.

Most organizations already collect website data. The harder question is whether that data accurately represents the customer journey. In B2B e-commerce, a valuable outcome may be an order, but it may also be a registration, quote request, distributor referral, approved cart, or repeat purchase.

IBM reported in 2026 that 43% of COOs identify data quality as their most significant data priority with more than one-quarter of organizations estimating that poor-quality data costs them over US$5 million annually. These problems are difficult to trace because the original error may occur in one system and appear later as an incorrect price, failed workflow, unreliable report, or missed opportunity.

This is why Data Realm connects measurement to the software producing it. We define what a successful event means, confirm what information should accompany it, and examine how that information moves between the storefront, commerce platform, CRM, ERP, PIM, and analytics tools.

Consider a customer who leaves after seeing an unexpected price. Analytics may record a product view followed by an exit and suggest that the customer rejected the offer. For example, a Data Realm architecture review could find that the account identifier did not match the correct ERP contract, causing the platform to display standard pricing.

The customer behaviour is real, but the first interpretation is incomplete. Implementation may require correcting the account mapping, validating identifiers before synchronization, monitoring unmatched records, and recording pricing failures separately from normal customer exits. The same principle applies to quote requests: measurement should distinguish between a customer clicking submit and the request successfully reaching the CRM.

The goal is not to collect everything. It is to create enough reliable information to understand what customers experienced and what the business should do next.

## (9) Turn data into actionable improvements

Performance and measurement create value only when they lead to action.

A dashboard may show a slow page, failed search, or abandoned registration. It identifies where to look, but it does not automatically explain why the problem exists.

This distinction is reflected in the [Intershop playbook’s](https://info.intershop.com/b2b-commerce-playbook)“Modernize Your Foundation” guidance, which recommends investigating concrete bottlenecks in pricing, product data, checkout, or customer-specific logic before considering a platform replacement or broader architectural change.

That approach also reflects how Data Realm turns evidence into implementation priorities. In one assessment, we found that prospective customers had no clear registration path and that distributor inquiries encountered broken handoffs when buyers were ready to act. Rather than treating these as isolated screen issues, the findings became part of a prioritized plan focused on the journeys with the greatest customer and business impact.

Each priority should have a clear definition of success. After a change is released, the same journey should be measured again. Did it become faster? Did more requests reach the correct destination? Did pricing failures decline? Did the improvement create a new problem elsewhere?

This creates a repeatable cycle: assess the issue, identify the cause, implement the appropriate change, and measure the outcome before setting the next priority.

## Your next move

Choose one high-intent journey and follow it beyond the screen. Confirm that it works across the locations, devices, and account types that matter. Then trace the customer action through every system responsible for the final outcome.

Data Realm helps B2B organizations carry out this work without assuming the answer is a redesign or complete platform replacement. We assess the current environment, identify what is holding the journey back, and translate those findings into practical implementation priorities. That may mean improving the storefront, simplifying an integration, strengthening data validation, or modernizing selected components while preserving what already works.

The goal is a stable, measurable commerce foundation that gives the organization confidence in what to improve and why.

Being found and providing a path forward are only the beginning. Sustainable digital commerce depends on seeing what happens next and having the ability to make it better.

Bringing the series together

Across the series, three connected priorities shape effective B2B digital commerce and complement the broader modernization guidance explored in the[Intershop playbook](https://info.intershop.com/b2b-commerce-playbook):

*Find: Make your business and products discoverable to buyers, search engines, and AI systems.*

*Convert: Give customers a clear, connected, and accessible path to purchase or support.*

*Optimize: Build a dependable experience, measure what matters, and use the evidence to improve it.*

These priorities work together. Reliable performance and trustworthy information strengthen discovery, conversion, and the organization’s ability to introduce future e-commerce capabilities.

If your team is experiencing unexplained performance issues, unreliable data, or customer journeys that do not work as expected, visit [Data Realm](https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0ymfFz0) to learn how a consultation can help uncover the source of the problem and identify the right next step.

We would also love to continue the conversation in person. Come meet the Intershop and Data Realm teams at [B2B eCommerce World Americas in Indianapolis November 2-3, 2026](https://b2becommerceworld.org/americas)!
